Supplement your way to glowy skin

If you're one of my clients, we have spent many hours discussing lymphatic health. I love lymphatic drainage and you probably do too. But something I often talk about is proper diet and supplementation. Today, we take a dive into my favourite supplements for skin and as you can imagine we're about to get weirdly specific.

For firmness: Hydrolyzed Collagen

Collagen is one of my all time favourites. It helps keep our hair and nails healthy. It protects our joints and our intestines. And several studies have shown an increase skin elasticity, hydration, and dermal collagen density. As someone who does 90% of things for vanity reasons, I live for collagen.

The most important thing when selecting a collagen supplement is to make sure you're taking hydrolyzed collagen or collagen peptides. I personally prefer a powder supplement, because when it comes to collagen I don't want a little bit, I want it ALL.

Extra Credit: Vitamin C

Did you know that your skin stores a high level of Vitamin C? It does so in order to protect itself from oxidative stress due to UV damage and to promote collagen synthesis. This makes Vitamin C possibly the easiest way to keep our skin healthy, bouncy and young.

Vitamin C also increases soft tissue healing, which is why I always recommend it as part of my clients' Exilis Ultra aftercare. During our Exilis treatment, we're causing micro-injuries to the collagen and elastin fibers in order to make them heal with a stronger bond. Vitamin C speeds up the healing process and promotes collagen formation, perfect for anyone wanting to tighten their skin.

My recommendation: the cheapest you can find. Just make sure to take it!

For hydration: Hyaluronic Acid

Oh hyaluronic acid... how much we love to inject it. But HA is so much more than just a lip filler or a hydrating serum; it's found all over our skin and joints. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar that holds onto water and moisturizes your LIFE. Oral supplementation is shown to increase dermal hydration and reduce wrinkles.

Edmonton weather is perpetually dry, sometimes that 10-step skincare routine is still not enough to keep you extra dewy. If you're like me and love to look like a glazed donut 24/7 I truly recommend Hyaluronic Acid as a supplement. Just make sure to drink lots of water, as HA attracts 10,000x its weight in water to do its job. You don't want that H2O to be taken away from other functions in your body.

For chilling: Magnesium

Nothing will stress out your skin more than... well, stress. I'm still recovering from the monster breakout I got the week of my wedding. It's been over a month and the scars are still there, reminding me to CHILL THE F--- OUT. Shout out to my gorgeous makeup artist, Victoria for covering it so well.

Magnesium has been shown to reduce cortisol levels and increase GABA in the brain. Translation: Mg is nature's chill pill. For all of you busy bees with 1000 things on the go, Magnesium can help you bring down the stress levels. But I want to make it clear: if you're fighting anxiety please speak to your doctor.
